Contractors that might typically operate under Design & Construct models include: Engineering contractors; Building, Mechanical / Process Engineering; Electrical (including Lighting, Heating and Ventilation); Refurbishment, and Water. Historically, some construction contractors decided not to take out Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance because in their view they had no design liability, instead assuming the PI cover in place by the Consulting Engineers and Architects of the project would be sufficient. More recently, this attitude has changed, with many project owners making Design and Construct PI insurance compulsory in order to secure a contract. Irrespective of whether it is compulsory on your project, there are some typical risks and exposure to contractors.
